A visitor to Fair Haven might easily think he or she has been transported to a New England fishing village of yesteryear, Steeped in history, this Navesink River town retains the charm of days gone by in neighborhoods of gracious old houses and picket fences just around the corner from the historic district of River Road boutiques and specialty shops. Many of today's five thousand Borough residents are among those who throng to New York during the work week, who consider living in Fair Haven well worth the commute, which may be rail on NJ Transit trains or by ferry from nearby Highlands.

In the 19th century travel directions were reversed. Steamships brought some of the most famous vaudevillians of the day to their summer homes in Fair Haven, and oystermen made their living farming the beds of the Navesink. Fair Haven's Fisk Chapel, built in 1888, is listed today on the National Register of Historic Places and still serves as a community meeting place The 40-acre Fair Haven Fields Nature Area offers trails, playing fields and a two-acre pond for nature lovers.
